Root Canal Q & A
What is a root canal?
A root canal is an endodontic procedure that preserves an infected or damaged permanent tooth. It involves Dr. Daugherty removing the pulp from the center of your tooth –– a soft substance that contains nerves and blood vessels. The pulp provides nourishment and sensation, but it isn’t necessary for the long-term survival of your teeth.
By removing the pulp and capping your tooth with a crown, it’s possible to reduce the risk of additional complications and ensure your smile remains healthy.
Why would I need a root canal?
Dr. Daugherty uses root canals to treat infections or damage to the tooth pulp. Common causes of pulp-related issues include:
- Cracked teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Undergoing extensive dental work
- Having a deep cavity
- Getting hit in the mouth
What does a root canal involve?
Before conducting a root canal, Dr. Daugherty reviews your dental health history, conducts an oral exam, and takes a series of X-rays to determine the extent of the damage or decay. Next, he numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and carefully removes the pulp from the center of your affected tooth.
Dr. Daugherty cleans your root canals and fills them with a material called gutta-percha.
Following a root canal, it’s normal to experience mild swelling and increased tooth sensitivity. During the first few days of recovery, eat only soft foods and brush and floss more gently than usual.
If the pain interferes with your ability to work or do other routine tasks, take over-the-counter pain medication or apply an ice pack to your cheek.
To prevent the need for root canal retreatment in the future, practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, floss once daily, and visit Dr. Daugherty once every six months for professional teeth cleaning and an oral exam.
